Valuing Your Values
How to prevent "progress dissonance"
What are your values?
Do you know them?
Are you really treating them like they are your values?
We think we know what our actual values are.
The key word is THINK.
What do you do when you believe that you value a certain area of your life but your actions show otherwise?
After reading “How Will You Measure Your Life?” by Clayton Christensen , I learned that one of the best ways to see your true values is by observing how your time and money are spent.
Our time and our resources (money) are the most valuable assets we can devote to a venture.
This truism is important and can help you prevent or discover if you experience “Progress Dissonance”.
“Progress dissonance” is often phrased as the question:
“Why am I not getting any closer to my goal in X area?”
You fill in the blank.
This gap begins to develop because our stated values and our practiced values are not the same.
If we look at the time and money we spend in that area where we lack the desired progress, we may realize that it may be an important “head” goal but has not progressed because it is not a “hands” goal.
We aren’t placing enough energy in the form of time and money into that goal to facilitate a change.
We have not achieved the activation energy threshold.
I have been experimenting with this in my own life with cycling.
I have spent more money and time pursuing cycling, resulting in spending less time and money in other areas
It creates a forcing function to prioritize my goal.
Not only do I not want to squander the money I have spent on my bike, but I also don’t have money to spend on other things.
This creates an environment where my only avenue is towards the cycling goals that I have selected. I have winnowed down my options into one singular target.
Everything cannot be a value in your life. We don’t have infinite money or energy.
Sorry.
But what you do have is the ability to put your time and resources into the values you deem important. And if you are not seeing change, examine yourself.
See where your time and money are being spent (check your banking app and calendar), then begin to create forcing functions around your desired values.
Buy the gym membership.
Register the business.
Pitch the idea.
Align your actions with your desires to make your values come to life.
